Meine lieben, my dears,

Sierra Leone ist arm im westlichen Sinne, aber reich an
atemberaubenden Sonnenuntergängen, wunderschönen Blumen und allgemein
unglaublichen Farben. Dieser Reichtum lässt sich kaum in Geld
verwandeln, aber sorgt für eine weitaus bessere Stimmung als jeder
Franken in der Hand.

Sierra Leone might be poor in our standards, but is rich in
breathtaking sunsets, amazing flowers and generally incredible
colours. That wealth is hard to transfer in money, but gives you a way
more satisfying feeling than any pound in your hand.

REGENFARBEN
Die allerschönsten Farben findet man direkt nach Regenschauern und
Tropenstürmen. Hier ein Beweis – und bedenkt, dass jede Fotografie nur
beschränkt fähig ist, die volle Pracht dieses Farbspektakels
einzufangen.

Das satte Grün von Tropenwäldern ist zutiefst beruhigend und auch
majestätisch. Eine der besten Aussichten in Freetown habe ich wohl in
meinen Aerobicsstunden jeden Montagabend mit Francis (der sich die
Aerobicslektionen eingeprägt hat indem er stundenlang Aerobics-DVD’s
geschaut hat). Die Aussicht motiviert zu schweisstreibenden (umso mehr

RAINY COLOURS
The best colours you find directly after heavy rains and
thunderstorms. This picture was taken directly after a heavy storm and
the colours were simply breathtaking. Apology for the photography not
being able to fully capture the awesomeness of it!

The full deep green of the tropical forests is calming and also royal.
One of the best views (and sunsets) in Freetown I get every
Mondayevening at aerobics with Francis. Francis learned the lessons by
heart by watching aerobics movies over and over again. The view of the
outdoor classes are motivating enough to look forward to this

COlOURPATTERNS
After having looked at 18 different houses, I finally found one I
loved immediately. It comes with a balcony with seaview, veranda,
garden, massive dining and living area and three bedrooms. I will move
in there in January, together with Haley. Haley is an American lady
who works with trafficking victims (mainly young girls that were kept
as sex slaves or work slaves) here in Freetown – a really tough job,
but so necessary. Steve, another American who manages a juice factory,
trying to create jobs, will join us. As the house is unfurnished,
Haley and me are currently mainly talking about colourpatterns, dining
table sizes, garden vegetables and animals (I probably get my
chickens!).
It feels amazing to be able to have your own place and also decorate
it as you want. The house will also be one of the reasons why I am
really looking forward to come back in January after my christmas
break.

FARBMUSTER
Auf meiner Suche nach einem Haus habe ich 18 verschiedene Häuser
angeschaut und nebenbei Freetown besser kennengelernt. Mittlerweile
habe ich ein Haus gefunden, dass mir sofort gefallen hat. Es hat einen
Balkon mit Meeressicht, eine Veranda, einen Garten, einen riesigen
Ess- und Wohnbereich, eine grosse Küche und drei Schlafzimmer. Ich
werde im Januar zusammen mit Haley einziehen. Haley ist eine
amerikanische Psychotherapeutin, die hier mit ausgebeuteten Mädchen
(vor allem Sexsklaven oder Arbeitssklaven) arbeitet. Dazu vielleicht
in einem anderen Mail etwas mehr – das ist eine sehr dunkle Seite von
Freetown. Steve, ein weiterer Amerikaner, der hier eine
Fruchtsaftfabrik betreibt zieht auch mit ein.
Haley und ich diskutieren momentan Farbmuster, die Grösse des
Esstisches, welches Gemüse wir pflanzen wollen und welche Tiere wir
uns wünschen – ich werde sehr wahrscheinlich Hühner halten. Ich bin
äussersts dankbar für das Haus und meine Mitbewohner und das ist auch
etwas, worauf ich mich freue zurückzukommen nach meinen
Weihnachtsferien.

(Vorhang)stoff ist?!

SILVER
Silver is the colour of the birthday present I made myself (I think 25
years are deserving enough to make myself a present). It is a TVS STAR
LX, comes with two wheels and one strong engine. It is silver, my
motorbike and I am already getting famous for being the only woman in
town riding an okada (what they are called here). You can start
praying for my safety now!

SILBER
Die Farbe meines Geburtstagsgeschenks ist silber. Ich habe
entschieden, dass 25 Jahre genug Anlass für ein grösseres Geschenk von
mir an mich ist. Es ist ein TVS STAR LX, kommt mit zwei Rädern und
einem starken Motor. Mein Motorrad ist silber und ich werde bereits
berühmt – kein Wunder, ich bin die einzige Frau in Freetown (immerhin
eine Millionenstadt), die ein Okada (so heissen diese Motorräder hier)
fährt. Ihr dürft nun anfangen für meine Sicherheit zu beten…

PS: I will be in Nottingham for my graduation from the 10th to the
16th December, then in Switzie from the 17th to the 4th January.
Really looking forward to see as many of you as possible – and I hope
I will be able to handle the cold! It is getting hotter here every
day, 31 degrees at the time of writing.

PS: Ich werde vom 10. Dezember bis 16. Dezember in Nottingham sein für
meine Masterfeier, danach vom 17. Dezember bis 4. Januar in der
Schweiz. Hoffentlich sehe ich die meisten von euch! Und hoffentlich
ertrag ich die Kälte – hier wird es mit jedem Tag heisser, momentan
ist es 31 Grad. Und das an einem bewölkten Sonntagmorgen nach einer
regnerischen Nacht, 10 Uhr. Willkommen in den Tropen!

Dear all, meine Lieben,

Die meiste Zeit hier in Sierra Leone verbringe ich bei der Arbeit im
Gesundheitsministerium. Das Ministerium ist in einem Hochhaus, das von
Chinesen gebaut wurde in den 60er Jahren und den Namen “Youyi” trägt –
“Freundschaft” in Chinesisch. Es ist das weisse Hochhaus, das ihr

Time for some work-stories! I spend most of my time here working at
the Ministry of Health and Sanitation. The ministry is in a skyscraper
built by the Chinese in the 60s and was named “Youyi”, meaning
“friendship”. Looking from the balcony of a friend, the white
skyscraper in the middle of the picture is my office:

650’000
Eines der Projekte, wofür ich verantwortlich bin, ist die Finanzierung
von Praxen
(Mehrzahl von Praxis?) anhand von der Anzahl und Qualität der
erbrachten Leistungen/Behandlungen. Das bedeutet, dass ich in meiner
zweiten Woche hier 650’000 US-Dollar im ganzen Land verteilte. Dieses
Geld wird direkt an die Praxen/Gesundheitszentren ausbezahlt, was die
Korruptionsmöglichkeiten soweit als möglich verringert.
Da wir zuviel Arbeit und zuwenig Angestellte haben, kann ich ziemlich
viel Verantwortung tragen – Ehre und Herausforderung zugleich!

COLLEAGUES
On my very first day at work, I met all the important people: the
security guy (who just sits there everyday in front of our office from
8am to 5pm without moving at all and looks like he is way past his
initial life expectancy), the newspaper guy (who brings the newspaper
everyday), the nut lady (who drops by our office and tries to sell
nuts everyday), the driver Mohammed (who is such a cheeky guy and
likes kissing my hand), the whatever-you-need-he-brings-it-and-cleaner
guy Ishmael (who just sits in front of our office and waits for us to
give him small tasks to do), the secretaries and my director (direct
boss). They are all lovely and very unique, if I may say so. Most of
my colleagues come into the office everyday, but whether they actually
work is another question. Is it not rare here that as soon as you have
a job, you just chill – because you’ve basically done the hard work
already (getting a job). This is Ibrahim, one of the guys that do work
sometimes – but not when he comes into our office!

RICOLA
Working in one of the poorest countries of the world holds its own
challenges. Everything I need for work, I basically have to bring myself – be
it a laptop, paper, pen, coffee, toilet paper, water, fixing broken
things or even internet. Fortunately, I got a desk and a broken (but
still “seatable”) chair. The desk is borrowed from the World Health
Organisation and if they want it back at one point, I will have to
work on the floor.
Working in one of the poorest countries also means that buildings have
different standards. We share our office with at least one rat, as I
found my Ricola, that I left in the drawer half eaten after a weekend.
Conclusion: rats do like Swiss sweets!

RICOLA
Ich arbeite im 7. ärmsten Land der Welt und das bedeutet, dass alles
etwas anders ist hier. Was auch immer ich brauche, muss von mir zur
Verfügung gestellt werden – ob Laptop, Papier, Schreibzeug, Kaffee,
WC-Papier, Trinkwasser, die Reparatur der Klimaanlage oder
Internetzugang. Glücklicherweise habe ich einen Pult und einen Stuhl
(der zwar kapput ist, aber man kann noch darauf sitzen). Der Pult ist
von der Weltgesundheitsorganisation ausgelehnt, die ihn jederzeit
zurückfordern kann – dann darf ich auf dem Boden weiterarbeiten.
Wir teilen unser Büro mit mindestens einer Ratte, die während des
letzten Wochenendes die Hälfte meines Ricola’s gegessen hat, das in
meiner Schublage lag. Ratten mögen also Schweizer Kräuterbonbons! ;)KRANKENKASSE
Der Präsident von Sierra Leone möchte 2015 eine nationale Krankenkasse
einführen. Die Gesundheitsfinanzierungsabteilung, die momentan aus mir
und Alex besteht, ist die leitende Institution des ganzen Prozesses.
Das bedeutet, dass ich letzte Woche eine Sitzung hatte mit 14
ranghohen, ausschliesslich männlichen und älteren Direktoren des
Gesundheitsministeriums. Wir diskutierten, welche Leistungen
inbegriffen sein sollten und wie wir das ganze finanzieren. Es ist
ziemlich herausfordernd, in solch einem Gremium als junge (weisse)
Frau gehört und ernst genommen zu werden. Aber die Arbeit an sich ist
ein Traumjob für eine junge Volkswirtin – wo sonst kann man bei der
Einführung einer nationalen Krankenkasse eine essentielle Rolle
spielen!

HEALTH INSURANCE
The president of the Republic of Sierra Leone has put the introduction
of a national health insurance in 2015 at the forefront of his agenda.
The Health Financing Unit, which currently embodies me and another
health economist, is meant to be the heart of the process. This
implies that I had a meeting last week with 14 toplevel, exclusively
male and old directors of the ministry of health and discussed the
benefits that should be included, the financing sources and so on –
based on a suggestion from our unit. The amount of influence one has
is thrilling for a young economist, even though it is a challenge to
be heard in such a committee as a young (white) woman. However, it is
an absolute dreamjob for any health economist! Where else can you
participate in the design of a national health insurance scheme – and
then one that is supposed to benefit mainly the poor?!

So far, so long. I really enjoy my job and am very grateful for that,
as my life outside of work is quite challenging and my levels of
frustration are sometimes overwhelmingly high. Right now I am
screening the housing market of Freetown and it is not very promising.
But yeah, it definitely keeps me busy – along with our current
security guards. There was money stolen out of our house and we are
playing Sherlock Holmes now and trying to find out who it was – the
night guard, the day guard or the cleaner. A real crime mystery.

Sonst ist mein Job hier vergleichbar mit unseren Verhältnissen. Ich
arbeite von 8 Uhr bis 18.00 Uhr, esse in der Kantine Zmittag (Sierra
Leone food) und arbeite vor allem mit Excel. Ein Email verschicken
dauert 15 Minuten (mit meinem Mobile Internetzugang) und daher wird
jeder Anhang zweimal auf Notwendigkeit überprüft. Ich mag meine Arbeit
und bin froh darüber – gerade weil mein Leben ausserhalb des
Gesundheitsministerium nicht ganz so einfach ist und mein
Frustrationsniveau manchmal echt hoch ist. Alles dauert hier etwas
länger und so wohl auch mein Einleben. Ich hoffe, es geht euch allen

gut und ihr geniesst den Komfort des Westens!

My dears, meine Lieben,

Sierra Leone – which is derived from Lion Mountains – gives plenty of stories to tell, trust me. Here a first collection, in either German or English (those of you who want to get the full picture: take language classes or use google translate).
Sierra Leone erhielt seinen Namen von den Bergen um Freetown, die einem Löwenrücken ähneln. Dieses kleine westafrikanische Land sorgt für genügend Geschichten, glaubt mir. BEGINNING
I will never forget my first view of Freetown – on the speedboat crossing over from the airport to the town after a long journey with a lot of luggage, the humidity combined with 28 degrees pouring out my sweat, tired and excited at the same time and also a bit overwhelmed by the thousand people that seem to want to help in exchange for some of your money. BISHOP
I went to an anglican church service on Sunday that was meant to last two hours, but as they celebrated a new bishop, they had a special service, implying a special lengthy service… We left after three hours, as there seemed to be no end in the near future. Singing 20 hymns is hard work, guys!
BOMBENDROHUNG
Al-Shahab, die Organisation, die hinter dem Terroranschlag auf das Einkaufszentrum in Nairobi steht, hat ähnliche Drohungen gegen Sierra Leone gerichtet. Insbesondere das Youyi Gebäude, wo unter anderem auch ich arbeite, wurde erwähnt und daher wurden die Sicherheitsvorkehrungen seit dieser Woche verstärkt. Das heisst, Fussgänger dürfen nun nur noch links durch das Eingangstor, Autos nur rechts. Da fühlt man sich direkt sicherer 😉 Ich arbeite übrigens im 5. Stock und die Aufzüge sind seit Jahren ausser Betrieb. BOMB
Al-Shahab, that is the organisation responsible for the terror attack in Nairobi, threatened Sierra Leone and especially the government building Youyi as well. I work inis building on the 5th floor and was pleased to hear that they are enforcing strict security standards from now on. That means, that pedestrians are only allowed to enter the building on the left side of the entrance door and cars on the right. BABY
Sierra Leone hat eine der höchsten Baby- und Kindersterblichkeit der Welt. Nahezu jede Frau hier hatte schon Fehlgeburten irgendwann. Umso erstaunlicher, dass ich bei einem meiner Einkäufe auf dem Stadtmarkt zusätzlich zu den erstandenen Kleiderbügeln ein Baby angeboten erhielt – ich müsse bloss einen guten Preis nennen. Ich habe dann freundlich verzichtet, bin aber am nächsten Tag zurück und habe der Frau für einen überteuerten Preis mehr Sachen abgekauft – Armutsbekämpfung durch Profitsteigerung der Händlerin ;).
BANK
Da der grösste Teil der Ausgaben der Regierung von Entwicklungsgeldern bezahlt wird, arbeiten wir auch im Gesundheitsministerium mit diversen Geldgebern zusammen. Momentan ist die Weltbank zwei Wochen auf Arbeitsbesuch und daher hatten wir diese Woche von Mittwoch bis Sonntag eine Konferenz ausserhalb von Freetown, an einem der wohl schönsten Orte. BEACH

I am currently on a retreat for five days paid by the World Bank in one of the nicest places ever: a luxury beach resort in Tokeh, a fisher village a bit further away from Freetown.
